----- WINTER LEAGUE ----

The Pink Ladies, playing in orange shirts with half a male team, claimed the 2008 Nottingham touch winter league title on 3rd March. They won the league with an exciting 7-6 victory over the defending champions The Black Eyed Bees.
The second winter league was a great success with 8 mixed teams each made up of 3 male and 3 female players, playing one another on the fantastic new rubber-crumb pitch at Gresham Sports Pavilion. Teams included newcomers Ratcliffe Staff, who’s captain, Martin Kaye said:

“We hadn’t played before, but have all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It’s great for new players as you get lots of coaching and help from the organisers Perfect Motion. We can’t wait until the summer league starts in April.”

Regular Scott Yarnell, who plays for Sport England team, Cr*p but Gorgeous believes the leagues are getting better each year as more players and teams get involved.

“This year was better than last year. The venue was great, and with more teams involved the quality of the games is continuing to improve. I thought the standards to be very high, if only the same could be said of my fitness!”

Despite the competitive nature of some of the teams, most touch players are attracted to the social aspects of the sport – male and females play in the same teams, mostly in the evenings after work. It also appeals to all sorts of ages, from 16 to 60+, with no previous rugby experience necessary, in fact it often helps if you don’t have any!

Whilst the winter league has now finished, the main touch season is yet to start. Perfect Motion Touch are running a series of taster sessions for the new spring/summer season with the first one taking place on Monday 31 March at 6.30pm at Lady Bay Sports Ground, home to Nottingham Rugby Club, before the leagues start at the end of April.

----- AUTUMN LEAGUE ----

Social team The Black Eyed Bees achieved an autumn double by winning both the Monday night league and festival. They held off a strong Leicester side in the festival to win by 3 touchdowns to 2, whilst they pipped Nottingham University to the league title, courtesy of a higher number of bonus points. The Uni gained some consolation by winning the plate tournament at the festival, beating Bedlam 2 touchdowns to 1.

Nottingham Touch will return in the new year with a winter league. Watch this space for further details.
